You know those Chinese finger puzzles? The ones you stick your fingers into only to realize it takes the will of a Buddhist-Zen monk to set you free? Well imagine one with razor sharp teeth; Designed to be inserted into a woman’s yonic highway; Designed to ensnare the male phallic vehicle in such a way it has to be surgically removed while the man is, I would imagine, in excruciating pain. What you’ve been imagining is the brainchild of South African anti-rape campaigner Sonette Ehlers. Her invention, charmingly christened Rapex, has been making waves in South Africa recently so I thought I’d see if I could get a consensus on the subject.
Pictures of the device as well as a quotes from the inventor are inside. It was only a short while ago we were debating one end of the spectrum vis a vis the punishment of a Saudi rape victim at the hands of a conservative, religious judiciary (HERE). It would appear extreme reactions to rape occur on both sides of the fence.
How does it work? Quite simple really. Women insert the Rapex into their vagina much like a female condom or tampon. Should they be violated, the Rapex secures itself to the rapist’s penis by way of barbed hooks. Extrication requires surgical intervention. No word yet on whether men can lose use of their penis for good (say, due to massive blood loss, lacerations, etc.).
Some quotes from Sonette Ehlers (the inventor) and anti-rape campaigners:
“This is a medieval instrument, based on male-hating notions and fundamentally misunderstands the nature of rape and violence against women in this society,” - Charlene Smith (South African anti-rape campaigner)
“Something needs to be done, and women are crying out for me to go ahead,” - Sonette Ehlers (inventor)
“… a terrifying thought that women are being made to adapt to rape by wearing these devices.” - Lisa Vetten (Center for the Study of Violence & Reconciliation)
“I don’t hate men. I love men. I have not got revenge in mind. All I am doing is giving women their power back. I don’t even hate rapists. But I hate the deed with a passion.” Sonette Ehlers (inventor)
Critics of the device argue it would be better to educate men not to rape to which Ehler replied,
“I’m not an educator - I will go for those they can’t educate.”
I can’t quite make up my mind about this. On the one hand, I couldn’t care less if a rapist’s penis was tangled in some barbaric device after committing rape. Serves him right really. On the other, what if this mistakenly happens to during a consensual, prurient meeting because the woman forgets she’s “wearing” the device. Critics also bring up an excellent argument; Would a rapist be so enraged at his mangled manhood he might step up his crime to murder?
I honestly don’t know what to think. Any comments either way, young embryos?

This is scary as hell. Indeed what if a woman puts it in.. goes to a bar gets drunk.. meets a guy and wants to get it on ASAP and forgets all about her lovely “bodyguard”?
Rape truly must be so rampant there for women to resort to such a device.
What i’m wondering is, does the device come out when the man’s penis pulls out? coz i wouldnt want to be attached to a man in excruciating pain…
I dont know though… obviously rape is a horrible crime, but whatever happened to mace.. or pepper spray..? These just seems like its going too far.
Yes the device slides out. Actually, it is the initial sliding-out motion that engages the barbs. Conceivably, to reduce the pain, one would be inclined to only make forward movements.
How do you foresee getting raped in order to put this on (or rather “in”) at the opportune moment? And wouldn’t a woman typically try to avoid situations that would increase her chances of getting raped? I don’t think I would wear this around all the time in the offchance I could get jumped in a dark alleyway three months from now.
An excellent question. I never considered wearability of the device. The first picture makes it out to be pretty big. I’m unsure how it compares to, say, a regular tampon. Would anyone consider wearing it if the lived in S. Africa (which has one of the highest incidences of rape in the world)?
This is a very good reason to allow concealed weapons permits. Concealed weapons would do the same thing (if not more) to the would-be rapist, yet, there wouldn’t be the concern of forgetting to remove it if she was drunk.
Wearing the penis trap is along the lines of pre-emptive attacks, and we all know what kind of clusterfuck that takes us into.
I was thinking about this the other day.. mostly.. when one rapes, they have a weapon of choice to force the rape.. right? So isn’t there a bigger chance the person will use said weapon when being confronted with this device?
In all honesty though, you gotta be really messed up mentally to go around wearing such a device. Most likely those individuals have been raped more than once and feel the mental need for this. Otherwise how do you mentally deal with putting this device in “every day”.. it would mean that every day you’re thinking “may get raped today, need to put it in”
@ Dagsy: Yes, one of main points brought up by the critics of Rapex, that it would enrage the rapist. I suppose they should coat the barbs in horse tranquilizer so once entangled, he passes out.
Further, Rapex would be ineffective (if not counter-effective) in gang rape (as was the case in the recent “Woman from Qatif” episode and many rape cases).
I like this idea but sadly it would never work here in the United States due to our litigious society. You see, some personal injury lawyer would sue the woman and the company for 15 million dollars for damaging the rapist’s unit. How can this be? Simple. Look at examples of case law where homeowners have been sued for setting up booby-traps in their homes that have injured or killed would-be thieves. There are also cases where the thief has been injured inside the home, attacked by an owner’s pet, or trapped inside a malfunctioning garage door. In some of these cases the criminal was awarded a cash settlement! This idea is great for countries with some common sense, but no so much in this one.
Agreed, this would never pass muster in the US. But am I correct in assuming you approve of this sort of device?
Yeah, why not? I figure that one should be prudent enough to check for said booby-trap before sex, whereas a rapist probably would not be so cautious…
